What is the difference between the “cold” side vs. the “warm” side of Lake Anna?
Because it supplies water to cool the power plant’s generators, the public side is referred to as the “cold” side; the private or “hot” side is where warm water is discharged from the power plant. In particular, it may be too hot for swimming close to the discharge point, where the private side can be significantly warmer than the public side. The season for water sports is extended on the private side. Via underground tunnels, some water flows back from the private side into the public side; as a result, the southern region close to the dam is warmer on the public side. Some fish move to these warmer waters throughout the winter.
How big is Lake Anna?
200 miles of shoreline make up Lake Anna, which is around 17 miles long. The lake’s shores are populated by over 100 communities. About 9,000 acres make up the cold side, while 4,000 acres in the private sector, sometimes known as the “warm side,” are connected by three canals. Three stone dikes that separate the two sides are present. The lake has developed into a popular location for fishing, water sports, and a variety of other activities, while the power plant powers 450,000 homes and generates 17% of Virginia’s electricity.
Is Lake Anna Natural or Man Made?
To provide cooling for its North Anna Power Station, Dominion Energy’s forerunner Virginia Electric and Power Corporation built Lake Anna in the 1970s. In order to build the 3,400-acre North Anna Waste Heat Treatment Plant and the 9,600-acre Lake Anna reservoir, the business bought 18,000 acres of property in 1968. (WHTF). The North Anna River was dammed to create the lake.
It was anticipated that it would take three years for the lake to fill up with water due to natural rainfall before the first North Anna unit could start operating for profit when the gates of the dam were closed in January 1972. However, Hurricane Agnes, a tropical storm by the time it approached Central Virginia, stalled and made landfall on June 21 and 22, 1972.
Is Lake Anna a good place to retire?
Lake Anna is a beautiful and peaceful place to retire. Located in Virginia, it is a man-made lake that covers over 13,000 acres. The lake offers retirees the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, and golfing. Additionally, Lake Anna’s proximity to Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville provides retirees with easy access to urban amenities such as fine dining, cultural events, and shopping. The area also offers a range of healthcare services, including several hospitals and medical centers. Furthermore, the cost of living is relatively low compared to other retirement destinations, making it an affordable option. Overall, Lake Anna is an excellent choice for retirees who seek a peaceful, active, and affordable lifestyle.
The bordering cities of Spotsylvania, Louisa, and Orange are also wonderful destinations to retire. Most people in the three counties, which range from rural to suburban, are home owners. The median home value is between $229,200 and $287,700, slightly more than the national average but lower than adjacent counties and bigger cities. Homes in the Lake Anna area have property taxes that are significantly lower than the state and federal averages.
